Docking & Dew Claw Protocol.
REGARDING DOCKING AND DEW CLAWS
All of our puppies have their tails cropped and dew claws removed at 3 days old; no exceptions. The reason for this is because we are a show home. Since it is impossible for us to know which puppy in a litter will become our next show/breed/pet prospect until at least 8 weeks of age, and docking and dew claws must be done no later than 3 days of age, we must do all of the puppies in the litter.
Tail Docking
Historical Reasons:
Tail docking in Poodles, and other breeds, historically stemmed from practical needs of working dogs, such as hunting dogs, where a shorter tail could prevent injury in thick brush.
**We here at Wispynook do still dock tails at 3-days old. We can't leave some puppies with full tails and some with docked tails as there is no way at 3-days old to know which puppy may be our next show/breed/pet prospect for us.
AKC Breed Standard for the Standard Poodle
Tail Docking: The tail is expected to be docked to a length proportionate to the size of the dog, and carried erect, whether standing or moving. The AKC breed standard for Poodles calls out for a docked tail.

Dew Claws
Reasons for Removal:
Dewclaws are located on the inside of the front paws and are removed to prevent them from snagging on objects or becoming injured such as being torn off by accident.
**The dew claw removal is done the same day that we dock tails, when they are 3-days old.
